Cardiac tamponade and pericardial effusion due to venous umbilical catheterization.
AIM We present three cases of neonatal cardiac tamponade due to umbilical venous catheterization, a rare, but potentially fatal complication. METHODS Timely diagnosis was made by echocardiography, and an urgent pericardiocentesis revealed TPN fluid. Perforation of the cardial wall was proven by contrast X-ray showing contrast diffusing into the pericardial space. DISCUSSION Most frequently,...
متن کاملCardiac tamponade complicating central venous catheter.
Cardiac tamponade complicating central venous catheters is usually fatal. We present a 23 year old woman who developed cardiac tamponade 12 hours after the insertion of a subclavian line. Early recognition of this complication and urgent pericardiocentesis led to her survival.
متن کامل[Cardiac tamponade associated with umbilical venous catheter (UVC) placed in inappropriate position].
Umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is widely used in neonatal intensive care units. Pericardial effusion is an uncommon but life-threatening complication; and tamponade have been reported in 3% of neonates having such catheters. We present a case of cardiac tamponade as a complication of venous catheter in a neonate. The patient was diagnosed at the appropriate time by echocardiography and the per...
متن کاملCardiac tamponade due to peripheral inserted central catheter in newborn.
This article reports the case of an adverse event of cardiac tamponade associated with central catheter peripheral insertion in a premature newborn. The approach was pericardial puncture, which reversed the cardiorespiratory arrest. The newborn showed good clinical progress and was discharged from hospital with no complications associated with the event.
متن کاملCardiac tamponade caused by central venous catheter in two newborns.
Cardiac tamponade secondary to the use of central venous catheter is a rare complication; however, it is potentially reversible when it is caught in time. We report two cases of cardiac tamponade that was diagnosed using a transthoracic echocardiography, followed by urgent pericardiocentesis and surgical pericardial drainage as a complication from umbilical venous catheterization. In one case, ...
